Plunge into Darkness - 1/28/13

Good evening everyone and welcome to City of Traders!  If you have are joining me for the first time you are in for a real treat, if you are a returning reader, thanks for sticking with me.

Tonight I am going to talk about every Rare and Mythic Rare card in Gatecrash, supported with a week’s worth of data.  After that I will put the data up from the other sets in Standard.  If you look at the data, you can see which cards have started to trend up since Gatecrash's release.  With that out of the way let’s begin with Gatecrash!
All prices are mid on tcgplayer.com at the given date
In alphabetical order:

Alms Beast (R) $0.69:  I don't foresee this card really blowing up, granted if your deck's win condition isn't getting your opponents life to 0, then you don't care how much life they gain.  There may be a control deck that wants this, but any beatdown deck worth its salt will not want this card.  This will probably end up at $0.33.

Angelic Skirmisher (R) $1.25:  We have seen quite a few 6cmc flies from White, this difference between those cards and the Skirmisher?  This card technically has an immediate impact on the battlefield since you can use her ability if your creatures are ready to attack.  Overall I don't see much happening with this card.  It will probably be less than a dollar soon and then fall some from there.

Assemble the Legion (R) $0.98:  I hate to say it but I don't think this card isn't going to see standard play.  It might be fun for a Commander build that can abuse proliferate, but I think it will probably end up at $0.33.

Aurelia's Fury (M) $26.46:  This card is hyped.  People are trying not to miss the next Sphinx's Revelation, and in doing so they have caused this card's price to be very inflated.  If you have these, unless you plan on playing them immediately, I recommend selling or trading yours off while they are so high.  There is no way this card is going to maintain this price for long.

Aurelia, the Warleader (M) $21.68:  I think Aurelia is a stellar card.  I think she may be a little hyped right now, but then again, her price is moving up and doesn't show signs of stopping.  My advice?  Hang on to any copies you own until her price peaks.  I think she will end up in Reanimator somewhere, or perhaps, as a finisher in RW weenies although the former option is more likely.

Biomass Mutation (R) $0.94:  Okay so you can make your team huge . . . if you have a ton of mana.  If you compare this card to Overrun it almost falls short.  When you combine it with +1/+1 counters it shines, but unless a UG evolve deck develops I don't think this will see much play outside of Commander.

Biovisionary (R) $0.93:  As much as I want to make the all Clone deck running four copies of this and then every clone option available in standard, I don't think this card is going to do much outside of some crazy Commander build.

Blind Obedience (R) $4.13:  This card is sweet.  I like the fact that it doesn't die to removal like all of the extort creatures.  It also hoses your opponent's blockers and stops mana rocks in Commander.  A white weenie deck can make good use of this in standard and so can certain control builds.  I recommend trading for these when you can and holding on to yours to see where this card goes.

Borborygmos Enraged (M) $4.00:  Sooo this guy.  Let's break it down.  Giant dude, check.  Immediate impact when he enters the battlefield (i.e. you reanimate him and still have lands in hand thanks to all of your mulching), check.  Commander appeal, check.  I actually think this could be one of the sleepers of the set.  Pick these up while you can at $4 and thank me later if they hit $8+.

Boros Reckoner (R) $5.67:  Trade for/Buy these!  They are a good three drop in RDW, which has been missing a good three drop.  They are basically Stuffy Doll so when you Blasphemous Act, your opponent will take 13 damage from it.  It also goes in RW decks and WW decks.  I really think this card is going to shine so trade for this one!

Breeding Pool (R) $12.74:  As always you can't win the game without lands.  Shocklands are always a good pick up, and even though Dragons Maze will double the amount of Shocklands in the market, these are still solid.  I will say the prices on these are inflated right now, depending on how widely used they are in standard, you may eventually be able to get these for less than $10, but you will have to wait.

Clan Defiance (R) $3.85:  Other than being a a limited bomb, this card may have Standard potential.  You will almost always take down a creature with this, and when you dome your opponent at the same time it is just icing on the cake.  I'm not saying to grab these now, but keep an eye on their price.

Consuming Aberration (R) $1.55:  Usually the Starter Deck rares are already at a disadvantage because they do come in the starter.  This guy does have the advantage of being a mill card, which happens to be everyone's favorite alternate win condition.  I could see this being popular outside of Standard, but its price will probably going to end up low though.

Crypt Ghast (R) $2.98:  Okay I'm only going to say this once.  This card is a steal at $3.  Look at this card: Nirkana Revenant.  It is going for $8.74.  Let's look at the differences.  Ghast costs 2 mana less, it has a more relevant ability (I like extort more than the pump ability), and it costs $5 less right now.  BUY THIS!  PROFIT!

Deathpact Angel (M) $4.34:  I don't think this is going to be an expensive card which an awkward survival mode doesn't scream playability, then again I could be wrong and this and the Ghost Council could be the biggest beating we see out of Standard for a while.  I'm wary about this and recommend keeping an eye on the price trend before you invest.

Diluvian Primordial (R) $0.62:  This is a Commander card.  By the time you resolve this in Standard you should just be playing whatever instant or sorcery you were planning on stealing from your opponent and save the hassle.

Domri Rade (M) $22.32:  Pick this guy up if you need him tomorrow, because hype is going to continue to drive his price up.  Otherwise, I recommend waiting to get yours because Wizards just banned the card that he really wanted to play with earlier today.  Here's the thing, his first ability is fine if you hit a creature, otherwise it is a complete blank because you don't get to stick the card on the bottom if it is bad.  His second ability is fine if your creature is bigger than theirs, so your probably going to use your two drop to eat their one drop or your four to eat their 2-3.  His ultimate is almost not even relevant in standard because most decks will either kill Domri or end the game before he ever gets to 7.  Let's say you draw him late game, either you dig for a threat and hope you survive for another turn, or hope you already have a threat to fight with, otherwise he is a complete blank.  I'm sorry to rain on any of Domri's supporters' various parades but I think this guy isn't going to live up to the hype.  If you have one, wait until its price peaks and then trade or sell him, that is my opinion.

Duskmantle Seer (M):  $14.80:  This guy isn't Dark Confidant.  You don't play him in the same kind of deck as you would Dark Confidant.  He gives your opponent stuff and is on the frail side with 4 toughness.  Granted he is powerful, but if you plan on running additional threats in your deck that cost more than 4, plan on taking some damage from this guy's ability.  I could be completely wrong, but I call 'em like I see 'em, trade this guy off before his price continues to drop.

Enter the Infinite (M):  $2.28:  This card is sooooooo cooooool.  I don't think it is going to be a very expensive card because it only really works in some infinite mana Commander build, or with Omniscience in Legacy.  Keep an eye on this one and see what happens.

Fathom Mage (R) $0.83:  Like the other Starter Deck cards, this is probably destined to end up at $0.33.  I think this card has some fun Commander appeal, but unfortunately will not see much play in Standard.

Firemane Avenger (R) $3.29:  This card is sweet.  Its main problem (right now) is that it is in direct competition with Hellrider for the 4 slot in aggro decks and it doesn't have haste.  Granted there are a number of ways that it could be given haste, I still don't think it is going to be aggro's #1 choice.  It also comes in the RW Starter, which could also have a negative impact on its future.

Five-Alarm Fire (R) $0.58:  Let me begin by saying how much I like this card.  In the right deck you can active the second ability multiple times during the game.  If you get more than one of them out it is game over.  Just in case you missed it, you don't have to sacrifice the Enchantment to activate it's second ability.  This could easily be an all star in the right RDW and for $0.58, pick up a play set at least, even if you don't plan on playing Red.

Foundry Champion (R) $0.47:  Another $0.33 card.  Coincidentally Wizards printed a 3 cost Common card that does the same thing, in the same set.  Bummer for the Champion.

Frontline Medic (R) $5.18:  This guy makes attacking fun and stops your opponent from going crazy with X spells, but it doesn't do much in the way of protecting your team on Defense.  Although if you combine it with Boros Charm then it may be a contender.  I would recommend watching this card's price trend before doing anything rash as I feel it could really end up in either direction.

Giant Adephage (M) $2.69:  While cute, this card just doesn't do much in Standard right now.  If you can find someone to trade this off to while its price is high take advantage of that now.

Gideon, Champion of Justice (M) $19.04:  That price is complete hype.  I don't think this Gideon quite gets there in terms of Standard power.  I could be very wrong, but my advice is to trade these off while they are expensive, because his price is only headed down.

Glaring  Spotlight (R) $2.13:  I'm really excited to talk about this card.  I don't think this is going to blow up in terms of price because it has a very niche application (nerfing hexproof), but if you read the second half of it, it basically says Pay 4 (assuming it isn't already in play) Swing with your team . . . in any color.  This could be a sick late game play for an aggro deck and gives Green, White, and Red access to unblockability.  Keep an eye on this and pick up a playset, just in case :D

Godless Shrine (R) $12.65:  My review for the Shocklands is pretty much the same.  They are great to have and retain their value.  Trade into them when you can and trade up in order to get the most value.

Gruul Ragebeast (R) $0.51:  This is a bulk rare plain and simple.  It may see some Commander play, but other than that, it just doesn't do enough for 7 mana.

Gyre Sage (R) $1.72:  I like this card.  It's an elf, it makes mana, and it can make more mana if you abuse things that add +1/+1 counters to it.  This is a solid card and I see its price going up.  Get a playset for $8 while you can and reap the benefits when its price goes up.

Hellkite Tyrant (M) $2.08:  This card is pure commander awesomeness, but sadly that is the only format where it shines.  Its price will probably go up a bit, but overall I don't foresee this skyrocketing.

High Priest of Penance (R) $3.39:  This is a solid blocker for the right deck.  If a BW creatures matter deck surfaces, then this guy's price is going to rise since he rocks in a creature matchup.  Keep an eye on this one.

Illusionist's Bracers (R) $1.46:  This card's appeal is, in my opinion, purely Commander centered.  It is just a bit too slow for Standard, but it will really shine casually.  Keep an eye on this one.  It's price isn't going to be high now, but down the road when people want to put it in Commander it's price will go up, probably long after the set leaves print.  This is a loooong term sleeper.

Immortal Servitude (R) $1.65:  You can't give us " X or less" Wizards?  Well I suppose not.  This card costs a lot to really do anything substantial.  7 mana for all of your four drops? 9 for all of your sixes?  Oh and you have to worry about getting the creatures in the graveyard.  Another Commander Card.

Lazav, Dimir Mastermind (M) $8.34:  Lazav is an interesting one.  His mana is very restrictive, as you may not always be able to reliably cast him on turn 4, but if you do cast him he can be a lot of fun.  Unfortunately, I think too much has to go right for Lazav to be awesome (a good mill, or killing something relevant).  He will probably trend down, and then be another Commander card.

Legion Loyalist (R) $3.94:  Remember 1 Red mana use to get you this?  The times sure have changed.  It's almost like someone looked at this card and was like, "needs more abilities".  Haste and potential Trample, First Strike, and Token unblockability, oh and hook your whole team up while your at it?  Wow.  Red wants this.  Legacy Goblins may even want this.  Modern probably wants in on the action too.  Pick these up because why not?  I don't think they are going to go down anytime soon.

Lord of the Void (M) $2.67:  Commander players rejoice!  Reanimators would probably prefer Grislebrand, but Kaalia fans have something to look forward to.  This card's price seems to be trending up, just something to keep in mind.

Luminate Primordial (R) $0.48:  Another Commander Card.  It's almost like Wizards planned this...

Master Biomancer (M) $12.04:  I want this card to be awesome, but it takes a turn to really get going.  And even then, your creatures are only entering the battlefield with +2/+2 unless you do something about it.  I may be pessimistic, but I don't think this card is going to do what people want it to do.  Its price is probably reflecting preorder hype, so keep an eye on it, and trade in or out accordingly.

Merciless Eviction (R) $2.31:  Cool card, but a cmc of 6 might break the bank.  This may see some play in Limited, but I don't think it is going to be a huge contender.  It's price will more than likely trend down to reflect this.

Mind Grind (R) $3.21:  People do love mill.  If a Standard mill deck takes shape, this is going to be its finisher.  Not only that, but this + Increasing confusion will tear any library to shreds.  If a mill deck becomes a thing, this card is going to skyrocket.  Plan accordingly.

Molten Primordial (R) $0.49:  Other than being a walking Insurrection in Commander, Zealous Conscripts already does this in Standard.  That is why this guy is going to be $0.33 soon.

Mystic Genesis (R) $0.93:  Meh.  I get that this kinda looks like Venser, but Venser wasn't dual colored.  This also costs 5 which doesn't help its case.  Look for this card's price to drop in the future.

Nightveil Specter (R) $1.47:  Another situational card from a seemingly situational set.  A lot of things have to go right for Nightveil to be beneficial, oh and it nicks the card from the deck not the hand which makes it even worse.  BULK RARE!

Obzedat, Ghost Council (M) $21.39:  Baring BW blink becoming a thing, I don't see this guy attacking for game very much since he doesn't have evasion.  It is cool that he dodges Sorcery speed removal if you need him to, but you do lose him as a blocker if you blink him for a turn.  I'm on the fence here, but I'm afraid I think he will go down in price before long.  If you see his numbers start to dip and you have a copy, I recommend trading yours off.

Ogre Slumlord (R) $0.64:  Standard Rat deck go!  Or not.  Bulk.  Flavorful Awesome Bulk.

Ooze Flux (R) $0.41:  Ooze idea was it to make this $0.33 card . . . Ooze next?  (Too much?) :D

Prime Speaker Zegana (M) $14.01:  Now we are getting somewhere.  I really like this card.  A lot.  It draws cards and is a huge beater provided that you have some kind of creature to play with.  Imagine this scenario coming off a turn 4 board wipe form your opponent:  Turn 5 Garruk Primal Hunter +1 Make a 3/3.  Turn 6 cast Zegana as a 4/4 draw 4 cards, spin Garruk down, draw 4 more cards.  Uhhh, that seems pretty good to me.  I say pick this card up because it will see play in some capacity.  If you can get it cheap, great.

Realmwright (R) $1.82:  If you really need early mana fixing in your Blue deck and have a way of keep a 1/1 alive long enough for it to matter then play this guy.  Alternately play him in your Mono U Commander build and be sure to name Island for style points.

Rubblebelt Raiders (R) $2.22:  This is the absolute definition of a win more card.  I can almost guarantee that it will not see play over the other Red/Green 4 drops available.  Expect to see this in the Bulk bin soon.

Rubblehulk (R) $0.60:  Another Bulk rare from the Starter Decks Wizards produces.  I could see this possibly seeing some fringe play, but even then, I don't expect it's price to be that high.

Sacred Foundry (R) $12.71:  Another Shockland.  People are really hyped on Boros right now, so it could be beneficial to hold onto yours and see if their prices go up any more before trading them away.  Although my philosophy is to hold onto shocks because they are just that good.

Sepulchral Primordial (R) $0.95:  This is the one.  Sepulchral is the best of the five in terms of reanimation targetability because you will likely snag one of your opponents creatures in the process.  He also will be the most widely played of the 5 in Commander.  Grabbing a few of these at $1 a piece probably isn't the worst possible course of action.

Signal the Clans (R) $1.29:  Did they really have to go back to the deck?  Yeah, I guess they did, otherwise they would have went to the graveyard and this card might have (read: definitely would have)  been too good.  Yet another one for the Commander Players.  Expect this card's price to drop as well.

Simic Manipulator (R) $1.12:  Initially when I looked at this card, I immediately saw Beguiler of Wills, and then I thought about it.  This card doesn't require you to keep the creatures on the field, only that they enter the battlefield and evolve him.  It also costs 3 instead of 5.  This may make it competitive enough in the right deck, but sadly I don't think it is going to break standard open or anything.  It does work nicely with Experiment Kraj though.

Skarrg Goliath (R) $0.41:  This will either be the coolest finisher green has ever seen or Bulk-tastic.  Imagine playing this on turn 6 on your attacking 5 drop (you're playing Green remember?) and housing your opponent for 13+ damage.  Stranger things have happened.

Soul Ransom (R) $1.77:  I just don't think this gets there.  Mind control is sweet, and making your opponent pitch two cards to let you draw two cards to get his guy back is fun, but until I see some proof or a positive price trend up, I'm not getting my hopes up.

Spark Trooper (R) $3.24:  If only this was 3 cmc.  I just don't see this going the distance in the 4 drop slot.  I could be totally wrong and this card could define WR aggro, but I don't think that is going to be the case.

Stolen Identity (R) $0.86:  As with all of the cipher cards, this one is, in my opinion, overcosted for what it does.  I do like the fact that it can copy Artifacts, but that still doesn't save this card from feeling a little too bulky.

Stomping Ground (R) $12.50:  See the previous Shocklands for advice on this one.  They are pretty similar at this point.

Sylvan Primordial (R) $2.28:  There is a reason that this Primordial is already $2.28 and it involves Woodfall Primus who is $10.  BUY THIS CARD.  It is going to see Commander Play.  It is a Non-persisting Woodfall Primus that hits each player and finds you some Forests for your trouble.  This card's price is going to go up, I recommend investing now and getting it as cheaply as possible.

Thespian's Stage (R) $4.74:  This card is sweet.  It's like Vesuva, except if something better comes along, then you have the option to transform into that land if you need to.  This will probably be a strong pick up and is one of my picks for a sleeper.

Treasury Thrull (R) $0.64:  This card just doesn't quite get there.  Another Bulk Rare :(

Undercity Plague (R) $0.68:  Another situation of Cipher costing too much.  Bummer really.  This will probably end up $033 as well.

Unexpected Results (R) $1.58:  As much as I want to play a deck with lands and 7, 8, and 9 drops, I think this card will be confined to Commander shenanigans.

Watery Grave (R) $12.73:  I hate to sound like I'm coping out, but see my previous Shockland comments.  They apply pretty well here.

Whispering Madness (R) $0.93:  If there is a mill deck, it might just run this.  In that case I suggest keeping an eye on it.  Barring that, it probably won't see any play and will end up bulk.

Wrecking Ogre (R) $0.49:  Last and maybe least is Wrecking Ogre.  This guy just doesn't really get there.  5 mana is a lot to pay for an ability that is absolutely win more in nature.  The Ogre didn't stand a chance.  BULK.

And with that we wrap up the initial financial review of Gatecrash.  This set certainly has some hits and some misses when it comes to Standard.  Overall, I would say the real winner here is the Commander crowd.  They get quite a few cards that I could see being run in a number of decks and for the most part, the cards aren't that expensive right now.  I really hoped you enjoyed this review of Gatecrash's Rares and that you will take my advice and use it with your own judgement to make some informed decisions.  And now, here is the data for the other sets.

Turn the Tables - 1/14/13

Good evening everyone.  Welcome to City of Traders!

I have been thinking a lot about this blog lately and I would like to share those thoughts with you now.  First let me say that I am going to continue doing this blog.  I am not, however, going to keep doing it in the manner that you are accustom to if you are an avid reader.  I use to post the data and then make my own comments based on financial trends and my own slightly intuitive speculation.  That, while fun and entertaining, took a lot of time.  It also offered no reward, ie. I don't get paid for doing this, nor was I necessarily looking to.  Additionally, some part of me hoped that this blog would reach a larger audience and generate more discussion.  Unsurprisingly and probably due to my own lack of marketing effort I did not get out what I wanted form this experience in the form of an audience so I have decided to make some changes.

That having been said, I will continue to collect the data because I find it useful and it doesn't take that long to do every day.  I will also continue to share the data via this blog but I will not be providing my colorful commentary unless something really strikes me.  I hope that you as a reader will continue to find this information useful and will take advantage of the data to make your own decisions.  If you have any questions or comments, feel free to let me know.  As always, thanks for reading, and may your games be great and may your trades be awesome!

New Frontiers - 1/07/2013

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD Evening Everybody!!!!  I bid you a warm welcome back to City of Traders!

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Did you miss me?  I hope so, because where else can you find everything you need to know about the different price trends happening in Standard?  If you were curious as to where I've been the past couple weeks, you need only look at the different holidays that Monday evenings fell on this past year, and that should answer any questions you may have.

Tonight I am going to impress you with all of the different trends that are . . . trending . . . in Standard right now,  which is business as usual, I am also going to talk about how I am going to handle the Gatecrash Previews/Spoilers/Release and finally I am going to talk about Rounding during trading, which should be interesting.  So let's get it started, but  first, two things.

First a disclaimer: As always, please take my advice at your own risk!  I am not a professional psychic and have absolutely no idea what card prices will do and that any advice offered is purely based on my own speculations/card price trends.

Second some directions:  In order to view the images posted on this blog at full size, please follow these simple directions.
Step 1: Left click on the image to bring it up.
Step 2: Right click on the image to bring up a list of options.
Step 3: Left click on "View Image"
Step 4: Left click on the image to enlarge it.  This will allow you to easily view it at full size.
Step 5: Marvel at how quickly prices can change.

TRENDING UP:

Before I get started, some of my more observant readers may notice that the dates jump around just a bit especially around the holidays.  This shouldn't alter the overall trend of the data.  For reference, I am going to give the amount of money changed ie. the number I put in (parentheses) that is the gain/loss from the week and use the difference between today's date and the number from 12/16.  With that, let's begin.

Abrupt Decay $6.00 (+0.38):  I'm not sure if this is run off from Modern (the likely explanation), or Standard inspired price gain, but I do know that Abrupt is on the rise.  I you have some that you didn't trade off when it was up so high weeks ago you may want to hold onto them and see where they go.

Chromatic Lantern $2.84 (+0.45):  My take on the Lantern's price trend is a combination of, "Hey I want to play 5 Color _____, I probably need mana fixing" and "OOOOoooo Commander, shiny".  If you find yourself falling into either of these categories you may want to pick these up.

Deathrite Shaman $12.53 (+3.45):  I think I've been raving about him for a while now, but in case you missed it, this guy does work.  He fits in Modern BRG, he ramps Standard's Reanimator Deck, and he is going to be an even bigger player if **Spoiler** mill becomes a thing after Gatecrash comes out.  I see this card easily hitting $20+ and if you need a reference for that number just take a look at Noble Hierarch.

Rest In Peace $1.66 (+0.11):  Usually you don't see sideboard cards getting incredibly expensive, but I wanted to make a note of the slight upward trend, just in case :D

Those are the only cards that show signs of growth, keep in mind now is the time to be thinking about how Gatecrash is going to affect card prices and to speculate accordingly.  If you have a hunch feel free to trade for a couple extra copies of something at your next FNM.  And now we are going to look at what is,

TRENDING DOWN:

Angel of Serenity $15.15 (-3.16):  Down a few dollars, but still commanding a fairly high price, Angel of Serenity is still a fine finisher.  If standard takes a faster track in the coming month we may see her price fall even more if you are looking to cash out on your copy and don't plan on running them, then it may be time to bail, otherwise hang on to yours and keep them handy.

Armada Wurm $6.00 (-1.65):  This card's price was steadily dropping before the 16th and now that we have seen almost another month of  prices it hasn't had a day of increase yet.  Sell yours accordingly because I don't foresee this playing a huge part in post Gatecrash Standard.

Bloodcrypt and the Shocklands:  I have noticed a trend down on these, but I wouldn't get rid of a single one in your collection until after all of Gatecrash has been spoiled entirely and you know what you want to play post rotation.

Detention Sphere $3.56 (-0.58):  I'm still sad that this didn't command the $7-8 price tag it had longer than it did, but I suppose they can't all be winners.  That said, depending on what kind of threats crop up in the future players may still find a use for this yet.

Dreadbore $3.61 (-0.51):  My comment for this is and has been similar to my comment about D-Sphere, however, **Spoiler** I will say that I don't believe BR aggro, or RDWs can kill the new Gideon without this card.  I could be vastly overlooking something but I stand by my statement.  This could play a larger roll if Planeswalkers becomes a deck again after they add two cards to their arsenal.

Isperia, Supreme Judge $1.19 (-0.17):  As of right now this card just isn't going to see play outside of Commander, and even then . . .

Jace, Architect of Thought $17.75 (-3.74):  Although Jace has been steadily declining in price he seems to possibly be settling down around $17-18.  From a financial standpoint I have been saying sell him since I started writing this blog, but for now I say, wait and see.  If CMC 5 Jace starts seeing an increased level of play (which his price spike may suggest) then people may want to be paying 2UU instead to get the initial advantage and this could increase the demand for AoT.

Lotleth Troll $3.19 (-0.27):  It looks like we may have to hold out until Dragons Maze until we see something to bring Lothleth back into the spotlight.

Mizzium Mortars $1.89 (-0.33):  There still may be reason to KILL ALL THE CREATURES! and run Mortars, but until we find one I think Bonfire of the Damned is going to see more play than this card.

Rakdos's Return $5.96 (-0.75):  I still like this card since it is comparable to Revelation (card advantage for you vs. card disadvantage for your opponent) and I would keep an eye on yours until we see how Control players decide to finish the game in the new Standard.  Also getting your opponent to top decking and sticking them with damage has to be good in some capacity right?

Sphinx's Revelation $18.24 (-0.76):  This only being down 76 cents tells me that this card isn't going anywhere fast.  **Spoiler** Skullcrack may make this less playable (probably not), but I don't think it is going to have tooo terribly much of an effect.

Vraska the Unseen $9.19 (-0.95):  While this card is in Standard, it will probably stay expensive, but after it rotates, it will probably drop  to a reasonable amount.

Next up, Avacyn Restored

TRENDING UP!

Angel of Glory's Rise $1.83 (+0.64):  Still moving up, but much slower now.  I don't think this card is going to go up too much more, but you never know.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope $10.56 (+1.01):  I have three words to describe this card's increase in price: Reanimator. Indestructible. Synergy.  That about sums it up.

Bonfire of the Damned $26.53 (+0.37):  I'm still skeptical about this card but if Gatecrash breeds another format with CRAZY mana ramp and people running lots of one, two, and three toughness guys then this card's price could skyrocket again, so watch out.

Cavern of Souls $23.81 (+3.03):  This card is always going to be expensive.  Depending on what counters spring up, this cards price will increase too.  Speculate accordingly.

Gisela, Blade of Goldnight $6.62 (+1.48):  I think I called this one before the Holidays.  This card has a powerful effect that immediately impacts the board and I think it will continue to go up it may even double in price if the right set of circumstances happen.

Restoration Angel $15.36 (+0.57):  Still good.  With even more ETB triggers popping up in Gatecrash and its versatile splashability, this card will continue to see play and continue to command this price.

Vexing Devil $7.01 (+0.28):  This card is good sometimes, and not bad others and has increased a bit over the past few weeks.  If there is one thing Red mages love it's one drops and damage.  I suppose that was two things. Oh well.

Zealous Conscripts $2.02 (+0.20):  Yoink!

TRENDING DOWN:

Craterhoof Behemoth $8.70 (-3.07):  Sell this.  It looks like it's down hill from here.

Entreat the Angels $16.91 (-3.13):  This card is good.  Miracle is good and depending on how things turn out it could regain popularity again.  But for now all signs point to selling these.

Silverblade Paladin $9.74 (-0.65):  It looks like this card may have peaked.  It will probably still play a roll after Gatecrash especially with the additional mana-fixing that GTC will provide so keep that in mind.

Tamiyo, the Moon Sage $24.54 (-1.73):  Tami's popularity has waned a little since her peak, but she is still a powerful walker.  If the all walkers deck shows up she will definitely be included thanks to her Draw power.  But for now you could probably get away with selling them.

Temporal Mastery $9.28 (-0.36):  This card's price was trending down but **Spoiler** since Dimir Charm was previewed this card plays quite well with its third mode.  We may see Temporal actually warrant the high price tag it started with when AVR came out.

Dark Ascension is next!

TRENDING UP:

Falkenrath Aristocrat $22.20 (+1.74):  This card's price matured over the holidays and has since slowed down a bit.  Watch for it to peak and start dropping if you don't see yourself running BR in the new Standard, otherwise hold on to your copies because you will likely keep them sleeved.

Havengul Lich $3.98 (+0.37):  Something about Dimir's impending arrival must have people hyped up about playing with the graveyard and no one plays better than Havengul Lich.  Pick up a few of these while they are around $4 and you may have some money on your hands if their price goes up.

Huntmaster of the Fells $26.14 (+3.76):  Good cards have high prices.  Gruul will only make this better.  If you plan on running them get them before they hit $30.  Otherwise, I recommend holding on tightly and not letting go.

Predator Ooze $4.83 (+2.72):  I have no idea what is going on here.  Seriously.  Other than the fact that some decks simply cannot kill this card, I've got nothing.  Can someone please enlighten me.  Thanks.

TRENDING DOWN:

Geralf's Messenger $7.35 (-0.89) and Gravecrawler $9.16 (-0.45):  Zombies (the deck) are dying.  Which is ironic considering that they may already be dead (the zombies themselves).  I don't think there is going to be anything from GTC that is going to renew their popularity.

Hellrider $9.18 (-0.28):  Just because Mr. Walking Burn-spell is down in price doesn't mean he is out of the game.  I like this card and so will the **Spoiler** Boros Battalion deck.  Oh, I need to attack with 3+ creatures for good things to happen?  I might as well get Hellrider's triggers too.  WOO!

Not much else to see so lets look at Innistrad:

TRENDING UP!

Angelic Overseer $2.14 (+0.17):  A small trend up.  I don't think this is going to have a huge impact, but I wanted to mention it.

Army of the Damned $2.17 (+0.17):  Once again this card's price has followed almost exactly in line with Angelic Overseer, I'm not sure if it means anything specific but I wanted to mention it.

Clifftop Retreat $10.66 (+0.42):  No surprise here.  Boros is coming up in the next set and people would  like to be able to play their spells.  Grab these if you need them/want to play WR.

Hinterland Harbor $9.35 (+0.66):  No surprise here.  Simic is coming up in the next set and people would  like to be able to play their spells.  Grab these if you need them/want to play UG.

Isolated Chapel $10.31 (+0.24):  No surprise here.  Orzhov is coming up in the next set and people would  like to be able to play their spells.  Grab these if you need them/want to play WB.

Kessig Wolf Run $1.69 (+0.19):  I didn't mention any of the other Utility lands, even though some of their prices have increased.  I mention Wolf Run because it literally spawned a deck, which is something to keep in mind going into the future, which will be filled with Tramply Trample RG creatures.

Past in Flames $2.26 (+0.25):  Remember when I told you to buy these?  I hope you did.  I don't think their going to go down, which means eventually they have to/will keep going up.

TRENDING DOWN:

Bloodline Keeper $4.10 (-0.19):  I don't think Gatecrash is going to bring a lot of Vampires for this card to help, which kinda bums me out because vampires are sooo cool!

Garruk Relentless $12.63 (-0.27):  I opened one of these at the Innistrad pre-release.  I should have traded/sold it then and there.  I think there is a lesson to be learned about planeswalkers and hype.  Nevertheless, Garruk will always find something to do in Standard so keep an eye on him.

Geist of Saint Traft $28.81 (-3.69):  I would chalk this up to variance, but then again, it may be that Geist's price is going to come down a bit.  Keep in mind also that when M14 hits, he will be a Legacy/Modern player only.  You've got to think long term too.

Olivia Voldaren $13.70 (-2.48):  I'm still not within my Swoop range (the price of Olivia where I swoop in and get every copy I can get my hands on) but I'm just going to sit here and bide my time.  If she goes down enough, inevitably she will bounce back again.

Sever the Bloodline $2.17 (-0.19):  I had high hopes.  Oh well.  Unless some crazy deck comes out with multiple copies of something then this may not be the primo removal spell I thought it was going to be.  We will just have to wait and see.

Woodland Cemetery $9.16 (-0.96):  I guess if you really needed to make a trade you could get rid of this, or if you had extra copies or something, but like I mentioned earlier with the Shocklands, hold onto your playsets of Rare lands until you figure out what deck you want to build.

Finally!  M13

TRENDING UP!

Akroma's Memorial $4.21 (+0.38):  This card is sooo good (Commander).  It is on the move and I recommend you grab a few before you can't find them for less than $8.  Just a suggestion.

Chandra, the Firebrand $4.19 (+0.22):  Chandra's one damage to something isn't really that much to talk about, however, her cast something twice for fun and profit is absolutely something to keep in mind especially when new cards come out.  Keep an eye on her and snap up a few copies if she continues to go up, or if something sweet is spoiled that can abuse her.

Drowned Catacomb $3.17 (+0.13):  This has nothing to do with Dimir. Shhhh, it's a secret to everybody.

Garruk, Primal Hunter $13.50 (+2.57):  Garruk's price is up because Green likes tokens, card draw, and more tokens.  I expect him to stay on the pricy side as long as Green mages keep playing fatties.

Gilded Lotus $3.15 (+0.34):  I like this card for Standard Mana ramp and I like it for Commander Mana ramp.  Pick a couple up and I don't think you will be disappointed.

Glacial Fortress $3.39 (+0.46):  I surmise this price increase is due in part to people wanting to have good Mana fixing, and in part to a lower number of Core set packs being opened.  If you don't already have a playset of these it really couldn't hurt to go ahead and get one.

Jace, Memory Adept $18.58 (+10.58):  Sadly, I wasn't around to let everyone know when Jace's price started going up.  Even sadder I didn't know how degenerate his price hype was going to be.  Jace's price spike is due to **Spoiler**  the turn 5-6 one turn kill from Jace's +0 ability and the new Duskmantle Guildmage who has an ability that says 1BU "Whenever a card is put into an opponent's graveyard from anywhere this turn, that player loses 1 life."  In other words, if you activate the guildmage's ability twice and then use Jace's +0 its Game Over.  I don't know how much higher Jace's price is going to go but I will say, people do love their combos/mill shenanigans.

Liliana of the Dark Realms $9.28 (+/-0.00):  Lili's price hasn't "technically" gone up since the 16th, but if you look at the past 4-5 days then you will see the trend that I am pointing out.  You're welcome :D

Master of the Pearl Trident $2.69 (+0.39):  Here fishy fishy fishy.

Mutilate $2.27 (+0.05):  Five cents isn't much at all, buuut I just wanted to point out that you can run a deck with all swamps that can produce all 5 different types of mana in the new Standard.  Mutilate is going to be good in that deck.  That is all.

Odric, Master Tactician $1.06 (+0.08):  **Spoiler**  Odric is a hipster.  Odric had a form of battalion before it was cool.  I suspect this price increase is directly linked to the fact that Odric will be included in at least one battalion brew.

Primordial Hydra $4.42 (+0.42):  Similar to Predator Ooze, I have no idea what is going on here, other than the fact that some decks literally can't kill a big enough Hydra.  Anyone have any insight?

Rootbound Crag $2.79 (+0.16):  cough GRUUL cough.

TRENDING DOWN:
I'm tired :D and want to actually finish this at a reasonable time, so welcome to a list of sad M13 cards:

Ajani, Caller of the Pride $11.08 (-0.66)

Sublime Angel $24.82 (-1.47): Peaked

Thragtusk $20.86 (-1.52)

Thundermaw $37.67 (-1.62):  Peaked

Yeah that is a good (sad) list of cards.  Oh, by the way, just because those cards have peaked, does not mean they have lived out their usefulness, I just feel like this is the most money that you will be able to get for them, so if you are looking to profit, go ahead and trade/sell now.

Alright before I go I said I was going to talk about two things.  First the way I am going to handle Gatecrash.  I will begin tracking price movements when tcgplayer  puts the full set of Mythics and Rares up for purchase on their website.  I do not feel like it makes sense to begin tracking prices for only some of the cards in the set.  If you have an issue with this, then my recommendation is to track the prices yourself and see if you can glean anything off of them.  I will mention Gatecrash cards, but until the entire set officially goes up I will write **Spoiler** before anything I post about cards from that set (as seen above).

Now onward to the second topic of Rounding.  Rounding is something that many of us as MTG players deal with on a daily basis at the trade table.  If we check the website of our choosing and see that a card's price isn't a nice round number like $1.00 or 1.50 then we will either automatically in our heads, or actually out loud by saying something like "it's about $X.XX" round the number to something more pleasing.

Here is an example.

Johnny and Timmy are trading.  Johnny has a Master of the Pearl Trident ($2.69) and wants Timmy's Gilded Lotus (3.15).  Clearly there is a price discrepancy here.  I see a couple of different scenarios playing out.

A)  Johnny and Timmy value Master at $3.  Johnny and Timmy value Gilded Lotus at $3 and the trade happens.

B)  Johnny values Master at $3 and Timmy Values it at $2.50.  Johnny and Timmy value Gilded Lotus at $3 and Johnny adds in a bulk rare to complete the trade.

C)  Johnny values Master at $3 and Timmy values it at $2.50.  Johnny values Gilded Lotus at $3 but Timmy values it at 3.50 and Johnny feeling they can't make a deal walks away.

In each scenario there are winners and losers and depending on how things play out someone walks away feeling better, or worse, about what has taken place.  All due to rounding.

Scenario A:
Winner: Timmy, Johnny, and Mark Rosewater for inspiring me to use Timmy and Johnny.  Here both players got what they wanted and didn't have to throw in anything to ensure the trade happened.  Rounding up in one case and down in the other brought both players to mutual benefit.
Loser:  No one (other than Spike who didn't get a mention).  Here no one lost because the trade happened and both players got what they wanted.

Scenario B:
Winner: Timmy (technically) but Johnny is happy too.  Here both players walk away happy so they are both winners, however Timmy technically won because he ended up with "more" value in the form of more than one card.  This may be an inaccurate assessment however due to the fact that Johnny may have been more than happy to throw in an extra card to get the more sought after Gilded Lotus.
Loser: Johnny (technically).  One could argue that Johnny "lost" because he gave up 2 cards for 1 and had his Master's price rounded down from $2.69 to $2.50 so he "lost" value.  However, like I mentioned before he probably got what he wanted.

Scenario C:
Winner: Neither Timmy nor Johnny.  No one won here because the trade didn't happen.
Loser:  Both Timmy and Johnny could be seen as losers in this situation because neither got what they wanted.  Since they couldn't come to an accord a trade didn't occur and neither was happy with the way things turned out.

So what do we learn from the three scenarios above?  It is okay to sacrifice some "value" by rounding down your card's prices especially if someone has something that you are really after.  Additionally it is okay to let someone round their cards up in order to get a little closer to what your card's price is.  If you make someone happy in a trade by letting them get a little more "value" out of their card then you are more likely to have a pleasant trading experience and will also be more likely to make trades with them in the future.

Another technique (albeit a less common one) is to set a "Rounding Rule" before going into the trade.  If a card is worth $2.25 do we round up to $2.50 or down to $2.00?  This may sound silly, but if everyone is on the same page before the trade begins, you may find yourself with a more enjoyable experience.

I hope this has been informative and that it actually benefits you in your upcoming trades.  If you liked this feel free to let me know.  Until next week, cheers, and may your games be great and may your trades be awesome!
